lobster is king
The good name and fame of restaurant the Oesterput stretch far beyond Blankenberge, where the Devriendt family started their seafood business five generations ago. The Oesterput is the place to be to enjoy fresh lobster, oysters, fish, mussels, or an exquisite seafood dish.
The Oesterput derives its charm from the vibrant lobster tanks located in the restored warehouse some ten meters from the dunes. The unique location, the friendliness of our waiters, and the guaranteed freshness of the seafood make it a place worth visiting. Lobster, oysters, and our offers of selected champagnes are our specialty. A cozy and romantic time is assured at the Oesterput.
The Devriendt family imports their lobster from Halifax, after which they spend some time in the Oesterput’s lobster tank, the largest and oldest one of its kind in Belgium. For the real gourmet, we receive a supply of Eastern Scheldt lobster during the season. The much-lauded Scottish lobster is also available at the Oesterput. Lobster is available from 500 g to 1.5 - 2 Kg.
The restaurant has a long tradition of serving seafood. It is also one of the few restaurants in our country where you are still able to find the Plateau Fruits De Mer in all its glory. Snow crab, king crab, shrimp, langoustines, periwinkles, whelks, scallops, oysters, and much more grace our Plateau Fruits De Mer.
Our eye-catcher is a unique formula where you are served only the finest our restaurant has to offer. It includes a bottle of champagne Pommery Silver brut, two plateau fruits de mers, and a 500 g lobster to be shared by 2 people.
We mostly use hollow oysters, also known as creuses. The fine des claires from Île d’Oléron are available throughout the year, as are the Gillardeau oysters. Zeelandic flat oysters (4/0) are also available from October until April.
Zeelandic jumbo mussels (on-bottom culture) are available from the end of June until the end of March. They can be served in a variety of ways.
We receive a daily shipment of fresh fish from Zeebrugge. We serve sole, monkfish, and salmon. We have monthly seasonal suggestions including brill, cod, skrei, turbot, or bass.

The story of the Oesterput goes back to 1885. “My great-grandfather, Pieter Devriendt, who everybody called Pito, was an entrepreneur. He started wholesaling fish in that year and became the owner of the first oyster pit constructed in Blankenberge in 1888; a pit filled with fresh seawater where oysters are cultivated.”
“The wholesale business and restaurant flourished and our family was delivering fresh fish, oysters, and lobster all over the country.” Owners Piet Devriendt (fourth generation) and Caroline Pattyn run the restaurant together with their two sons.
